In the beginning...

Hello and welcome to my blog!

My name is Sarah Morris. I am a 21 years old, born and raised “right outside Philly” in Ambler, Pennsylvania. I am currently a rising senior at The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC with a major in politics and minor in philosophy & theology.

This semester I was given the opportunity to take the theology course titled “Mission of the Contemporary Catholic.” The discourse focuses on what it means to be and “think Catholic.” And in doing so, what it might mean to interact in an increasingly secular world that may not welcome the Church’s message. Class lectures and discussions revolve around fulfilling our baptismal call and serving as an ongoing witness to Christ. We, the baptized, are sharers in the prophetic mission. Throughout the course, Lumen Gentium’s “Universal Call to Holiness” is advocated. Each and every one of us are called to be holy; it is constant work in progress and real living determination for wholeness, acceptance, and devotion to God.

The course description notes an overarching theme of the course is how might the human life appear when it is lived entirely under the horizon of faith in God. As the former leader of the Jesuits, Pedro Arrupe tells us, “Nothing is more practical than finding God, that is, than falling in love in a quite absolute, final way. What you are in love with, what seizes your imagination, will affect everything.”

As an alternative to a final exam for this course, we are required to design a final project that illustrates what we are discussed in and learned from the course. As Pope Benedict XVI stated, the emergence of the Internet as a network for communication is a “phenomenal characteristic of our age.” And particularly, the rise of social media. And here lies a great opportunity for the Church to proclaim its message, spread knowledge and build fellowships. Therefore, for my final project I will be “Blogging for Jesus.”

So, what should you expect from this blog? This blog will cover a range of issues from the joy & struggles of being a layperson in the Catholic Church to political, social & moral matters influencing the Church. Spirituality, leaders in faith & service today, as well as other topics and questions stemming from class will be included. Being a fan of visuals and music, there will also be photos and songs included in the blog. I welcome each of you to join me on this journey...

“The goal is for all the faithful to move from a faith of habit, sustained perhaps by social context alone, to a faith which is conscious and personally lived."
– Pope John Paul II, Ecclesia in America
